Please read the my answer from the following question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

With the requisite precautions for any new technology, you should use HDMI wherever possible. If implemented correctly HDMI greatly simplifies the interconnection process. Again, please read my answer from the link above for more information.
If your media PC is not equipped with HDMI connections then the next best interconnection choices would be either IEEE 1394 (aka, FireWire, i.Link, etc.) or an S/PDIF (audio) + DVI-HDCP (video) combination.

a/v receivers are your best choice. this will let you hook up multiple sources and switch between each when you want. for videos get componet cables if output is present from the source.

    Cathy,
Here is a forum that I visit frequently that you can ask questions in particular Forums (e.g. Dish Network, Comcast, Sony, etc)http://hdtvoice.com/voice/index.php
I would start by going through the FAQ’s which I believe would answer many of your questions.http://hdtvoice.com/voice/forumdisplay.p…
One of the problems with trying to give you advice in Answers is we can’t really do back and forth dialogue like that in a regular Forum
For your Surround System (you definitely want to get that going) I would think just hooking up an audio cable (white/red (left/right) RCA type) from your STB Audio-Out to your Surround Receiver Audio-In should get you going.
Make sure on your receiver you have it set to receive whatever the cable plugs in to (e.g. Tape, Auxiliary, whatever)
    Have fun!
