HDMI Cable does not go into USB. Please be careful about that. They are two different sockets.
If your phone acts as a plug n play hard drive (like nokia), then you can play the files on your TV, if you connect it through USB cable into the USB slot of the TV (not HDMI slot)

Its for mass storage devices, portable hard drives etc, so you can view pictures videos etc. just plug it straight in and away you go. some mp3 players work too so you can play your music through your tv

Its for usb devices like flash drives and cameras so you can view photos on your tv and listen to mp3s.
